Sound Healing Success - Balancing the Immune SystemJun 24, 2021
As part of our Level 2 Diploma in Integral Sound Healing with clients students are required to demonstrate what they have learned with practice case studies.
This month we asked student Emily Mattschoss to share one of her case studies with us. In this case study she has been working with Sue, a 71 year old woman who has been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and IBS.
What are Rheumatoid arthritis and Irritable bowel syndrome ?
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease where your immune system attacks your joints. Multiple joints can be affected at a time. The joints in your hands, wrists, and knees tend to be the most common targets.
When your immune system attacks these joints, it causes pain, inflammation, and stiffness. This can lead to degeneration of the joints. People with RA may lose joint function or even develop deformities in the affected joints.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine. Pain can be chronic for those who suffer with it.
Sue, a 71 year old woman who took up the opportunity to be a case study and have 4 sound healing sessions.
She understood the concept of un dealt stress and emotions manifesting in the physical. The opportunity for the sound healing sessions came at the time when she was feeling like some shifts needed to occur in her life.
Sue had been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. However the Doctors had told her that there were no markers of the disease in her blood tests. Upon hearing this, Emily immediately knew that the reason for the Doctors findings were because her symptoms were related to either stress, unresolved emotions or possibly past trauma.
She was also suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and expressed constant daily stress from being a full time carer to her husband as well as dealing with other family issues.
Emily met with her case study fortnightly. She used the the interval of a 5th in some way in all her sessions to support continued balancing of her nervous system by triggering the relaxation response in the body.
Protocols were chosen around Sue’s desired intention for each session. Other aspects (instruments, techniques and intervals) within the session were included to support her fluctuating needs that were being reflected in her feedback/discussions at the start of the session and self-questionnaire. Singing bowls intervals were played to support aspects of joint mobility, openness, digestion and lifting of the Spirit, as well as a little Gong & Voice for releasing and & Koshi chimes (Water and Earth to balance the “Dryness” (Heat and Air) of the Arthritic symptoms). Tuning Fork Protocols were also used.
Progress for Sue was slow at first, however in Session 3 she experienced a significant release that presented in the form of “tickly throat/coughing”. Through the use of vocal toning and other sounds, she experienced a profound sense of heat in her body and a sensation on her face. She went on to share that she heard a voice tell her “it’s an injury”…to which she seemed to know that there was a “bullet” from a conflict. After the session she shared that she felt it was related to trauma from her childhood. Her Father had been violent, controlling and she had learnt to stay quiet. She physically felt the release as she joined in using the vocal tone “Ahhhhhhh” in that moment.
Following this session, Sue’s self-questionnaire ratings shifted dramatically.( see below) Large areas of pain/discomfort had disappeared. Digestive Issues dropped considerably, as did worry, fatigue, self-criticism, depression and fear. She expressed that her energies have increased and her sleeping has improved considerably also.
According to Emily, "Sue came out of curiosity looking for shifts and has received so much more than she thought possible. She is amazed at the degree to which healing is occurring"
Thank you for sharing this journey with us Sue and we are filled with joy that your curiosity has brought about such a positive experience with sound healing for you!

Every session amazes me in some way. The power of sound has such a profound and therapeutic way of assisting people on their life’s journey and in healing. For Sue, it has been a very healing experience not only physically, but also emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
